suspended particles in a solid system
solid particles in a suspended system

‘p a r t i c l e s’ is a contemporary choreography performed in the historic museum rooms of the Landesgalerie Linz. The human body is placed in relation to the current Bauhaus exhibition in terms of its materiality and multidimensionality. The dancers explore the spatiality and movement logic of their own bodies and relate their kinetic know-how to the structures of their surroundings.

Inge Gappmaier’s contemporary choreography ‘p a r t i c l e s’ reveals conceptual connections between geometry and movement, the human body and material. It thus addresses fundamental principles that were also valid on the Bauhaus stage in the 1920s. The juxtaposition reveals exciting parallels but also contrasts between contemporary choreography and the Bauhaus dances documented in the exhibition.

PRESS

´As part of the exhibition ‘Bauhaus – Relationships Upper Austria’, Inge Gappmaier presented her choreography ‘particles’ at the Landesgalerie Linz. Inspired by Bauhaus dances, the three dancers – Lena Pirklhuber, Stefanie Sommer and the choreographer – developed the geometric movement material further in meditative concentration at different stations. They led the audience up the representative staircase of the Landesgalerie to the exhibition, using niches and landings as spaces for action. The three were often far apart, yet connected, occasionally meeting for a joint dance. In their colourful costumes, they sometimes seemed like intruders in the world of static images, then again like necessary additions to it. However, this quiet work never stood in contrast to the deliberate attitude of the protagonists of this exhibition, such as Hans Joachim Breustedt, Franz Oehner and Herbert Bayer, who had all studied or worked at the Bauhaus and were members of the Künstlervereinigung MAERZ association in Linz.´
